The History of Black Hair


Each strand of black hair grows like a tiny spring or a corkscrew shape. The texture and look of African hair come from the curvature in the hair follicle, while straight hair follicle cause straight hair to grow curved one causes curved hairs to grow. Though individuals of African descent have less hair than other individuals with straight black hair, the texture and appearance seems to have the impression that African’s have more hair than other races. The shape of the hair makes it very prone to breakage when combed or brushed. Slave masters usually the master’s wife would refer to their slaves as having nappy or kinky hair and would force many of the female slaves to cut their hair from the fair that their husbands would be attracted to the slaves. Many African tribe women spend hours per day dressing and caring for their hair, like many women they attribute their hair as a part of their beauty. Persons of African descent have about 190 hairs per square centimetre, while Caucasians have about 227 hairs per squares per centimetre. Also African hair grows at a rate of 256 micrometres per day, while Caucasian hair grows at 396 micrometres per day.

African hair is the only hair type that has a higher rate of protecting the brain from UV Radiation emitted by the sun.
